Scenario
Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. When her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer turns to Sam to protect her. Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam gets his guns, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the band The Damned.
It starts off really well
A Tale from New York Written by Jem Finer, Shane MacGowan Performed by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl. This is one of those ordinary entertainments where you really can’t fault the acting and the production values are almost flawless. You think you’re going to be captivated and drawn into a complex spy thriller.
But John Le Carre is not
But you quickly realize that it’s neither serious nor funny. As is often the case these days, the problem is the lack of a story. It’s filled with quirky characters and, indeed, characters with all the charm and conversational wit one would expect from psychopaths.
Unfortunately, that’s a bummer, as it could have been really good
They may be related to Eve from Killing Eve, but they’re poor cousins and don’t quite measure up to the extent of psychopath DNA inheritance. It’s a comic book caricature of a spy thriller, with a plot that relies on a thin plot and frequent action scenes to fill in the blanks.
